Powering Poland’s Future:The Gdańsk Refinery Expansion Project

A Transformational Milestone by Hudson Oil Corporation

At Hudson Oil Corporation, we believe that true progress is measured not just by output, but by impact — on people, on infrastructure, and on the sustainable energy future of our nation. Our Gdańsk Refinery Expansion Project stands as a symbol of that belief, a bold step toward strengthening Poland’s energy independence and refining capabilities.

The Vision Behind the Project

In response to the growing demand for high-quality, low-emission fuels across Europe and the Baltic region, Hudson Oil launched the Gdańsk Refinery Expansion Project in early 2023. Situated strategically along Poland’s northern coastline, the refinery has long served as a vital link in the national energy supply chain. But with tightening EU fuel standards, increasing global fuel complexity, and the need for greater processing efficiency, an upgrade was not just necessary — it was inevitable.

“This project is not just about scaling capacity — it’s about future-proofing Poland’s refining industry with world-class technology, environmental integrity, and operational excellence.”
Michał Ostrowski, Director of Refining Operations, Hudson Oil Corporation

What the Expansion Includes

The project involves a comprehensive overhaul and expansion of the existing refining infrastructure, covering:

  • Construction of a new Hydrocracking Unit (HCU): Designed to increase the output of diesel and jet fuel while reducing sulfur content in line with Euro VI standards.

  • Installation of a state-of-the-art Hydrogen Production Facility: To support clean refining processes and provide surplus hydrogen for industrial use.

  • Upgraded Wastewater Treatment Systems: Integrating advanced filtration and effluent management to meet EU environmental directives.

  • Expanded Storage and Blending Capabilities: Additional tank capacity and automated blending systems for product customization and export readiness.

  • Digital Automation Integration: AI-driven monitoring, predictive maintenance, and process optimization technologies for seamless operations.

 Built with Sustainability in Mind

True to Hudson Oil’s sustainability values, the Gdańsk Refinery Expansion Project is being executed with a strong environmental and social governance framework. Key sustainability elements include:

  • Carbon Footprint Reduction: The upgraded systems are projected to cut GHG emissions by over 20% per barrel refined.

  • Circular Water Usage: Over 80% of the plant’s water is treated and reused internally.

  • Renewable Energy Integration: A solar photovoltaic system will supply a portion of the facility’s auxiliary power.

  • Community Engagement: The project has created over 500 local jobs during construction and will sustain 200+ direct and indirect roles post-completion.

Strategic Importance

The expansion is not just a technological upgrade — it’s a strategic asset for Poland and Central Europe. With the capacity to refine up to 150,000 barrels per day, the modernized Gdańsk facility will:

  • Reduce Poland’s dependency on imported refined products

  • Strengthen energy security and supply continuity

  • Support NATO and EU fuel requirements through compliant production

  • Serve as a hub for Hudson Oil’s refined exports to Germany, Scandinavia, and the Baltic states

Project Timeline & Status

  • Groundbreaking: Q1 2023

  • Mechanical Completion: Expected by Q4 2025

  • Commercial Operations: Targeted for early 2026

As of Q2 2025, the project is nearing 75% completion, with major structural and civil works finalized. Equipment installation and testing are actively underway, with strict adherence to HSE protocols and ISO 45001-certified safety standards.
